Here’s what you get over 4 weekends
The NLP + HGE™ Practitioner syllabus is continually improving and developing, but there are certain core parts of it that are considered to be the basic syllabus, and what I’d like to do is run through some of them and let you see what they’re actually about, and why you’d want to learn them, and see how useful this stuff can actually be.
Most self-help courses are about stoking your motivation, polishing your communication and installing soft skills. This is all of those, PLUS one key difference – this is about PERSONAL CHANGE. This is 8 days spent changing your beliefs, clearing your blocks, resolving your conflicts and dissolving your obstacles. Let me help you get out of your own way.
That requires skill, expertise and experience. That requires that you trust someone with your head and your heart. You might want to talk about your personal fears and concerns, as well as your dreams and desires. Only then do you really fly. This isn’t about plastering over the cracks – this is about bringing in the JCB’s!!
So, NLP + HGE Practitioner Training is all about change – if you want to change how you behave, you have to change what you’re doing in your head, cos it’s what you’re doing in your head that makes you do it in the first place. And to make things really simple, you can split it into what are usually called “The 4 Pillars of HGE™”
The Four Pillars of HGE™
The HGE™ syllabus contains certain core parts, and what I’d like to do is run through some of them and let you see what they’re actually about, and why you’d want to learn them, and see how useful this technology can actually be.
One of the first things we cover on NLP + HGE Practitioner courses are what are called “The Presuppositions of HGE™”. Those are the things you have to presuppose – they’re suggested beliefs that are useful. If you run them in your head you tend to find that life gets a lot easier, or you get better results, just by thinking this way. They’re simply a suggested mindset or outlook, so if you run them in your head it will change the way you look at things. Software for the mind. Does that make sense?
So, for instance one of them is “There’s no such thing as failure, there’s only feedback”. You know that everything that you do generates an outcome. We don’t use the word “goal” very much in HGE™; we use the word “outcome”. Reason is you don’t always get your goal, but you always get an outcome. May not be the outcome you want, but you still create an outcome. Now, if you take that outcome as feedback then it’ll either be taking you towards what you want, or away from what you don’t want. So imagine a plane wants to fly from Glasgow Prestwick to Standsted, yeah? It knows its outcome and it takes off and it flies off in that direction. Now if it checks its computer to find out where it is, and discovers it’s halfway over Iceland, then it’s generated an outcome! Right? Not the outcome it wanted but it is still an outcome.
Now, if you take that as feedback, it tells you what to do next. It tells you where you need to go – you need to turn the plane around and go in the other direction! Take that as feedback – it’s not failure. You’ve actually learned something and generated an outcome. Now, if you operate from that basis it makes life a hell of a lot easier, you don’t have to beat yourself up about “Oh I’m so bad at what I do”, you know, it’s “You generated an outcome” and take it that way. That kind-of implies forgiveness. It implies forgiveness for yourself, as well as for everyone else. You know, other people don’t necessarily fail at things, they also generate outcomes and they can also take that as feedback.
Think about it, imagine if just that one principle became something you filtered your life through – you looked through those kinds of glasses from time to time. That would probably make quite a difference in the way you think, the way you behave. Now, there are over a dozen presuppositions, and HGE™ really is not just a bunch of techniques, it’s an entire mindset, an attitude, a way of looking at things. You know the difference between a Practitioner and someone who just “does positive thinking” is, an HGE™ Practitioner treats these presuppositions as a Code of Conduct, at least that’s what I think.
Just imagine how life would be if you started to adopt just one of these dozen or more useful beliefs – we cover all of them, in detail, one at a time, and we help you to integrate and breathe life into them in your own mind.
How to always get your goals
The next thing we look at is Outcomes. We use the word Outcome all the time because HGE™’s focus is quite proactive – our basic fundamental mindset is that you can change your life – you don’t need to sit there and be miserable in your circumstances – you can actually change things and make it better, so we’re outcome-driven, we’re very proactive, solution-oriented, not problem oriented!
One of the things that have been discovered is that people who are good at achieving their outcomes have several common denominators – they do certain things in certain ways to get what they want. Success leaves clues. It’s almost like there’s a recipe for creating an outcome that if you use the recipe to mix up the ingredients, you stack the deck in your favour, and you make the outcome a lot more achievable.
Imagine that – imagine there’s something you want in your life right now, and there’s a set of questions that, just by answering the questions would help to redefine that outcome, and word it maybe differently, or make you think about it differently, and because you’re thinking about it differently, you’ve just stacked the deck and made it a lot more likely to happen. So, in other words if you want to get more of what you want in your life, there’s a chunk of HGE™ guidance which would amplify and reinforce all your attempts at doing that, generally making it easier for you to get more of what you want. Does that sound useful?
Have more people like you more
You’ll spend a lot of time talking about Rapport on this course – Rapport is that state where you connect, know, and trust somebody. You’ve probably had times when you’ve clicked with people, you’ve instantly hit it off and you get on, yes? You’ve probably also had times where you’ve talked to somebody and it’s just not happening – you think who is this Martian? And you just can’t relate to this person at all.
Rapport is a skill, and it’s the ability to create that connection with a complete stranger anytime you want to. And the nice thing about it is, it’s not some kind of fluffy philosophy or technique or willy-nilly idea, it actually genuinely is a series of things that you can do, and you can tell when it’s working cos you get direct signals – you get signs that come back that are quantifiable and instantly visible and feel-able, from the person you’re getting rapport with, or the people you’re getting rapport with, cos it works just as well in groups as it does face to face with one individual.
Which tells you whether or not you’re getting on, which means you can tell if it’s working. Now there’s an old quote that says everything in life you want is either owned by someone else or you’re going to need someone’s help to get it, so you’d better be good at building rapport. It’s a fundamental skill. Especially if you’re going to be doing therapy, coaching or consulting, because they’re only going to tell you their deepest, darkest fears if they know you, like you and trust you.
If you’re going to be using HGE™ for marketing and sales, then people will only do business with you cos they know you, like you and trust you. If you’re going to be teaching or presenting, then you want your audience to know you, like you and trust you. And quite frankly, as a teacher or trainer or educator, it’s much nicer to be standing in front of an audience who like you rather than an audience who don’t. And you may know how that feels.
In essence, Rapport skills are one of the fundamental skills that we teach on a course because we firmly believe that if you have rapport, it makes your life a hell of a lot more pleasant and easier. Which is the bottom line with all this stuff – the bottom line with HGE™ is that it lets you get more of the results you want in life more often, in more easier ways…
You’ll be virtually able to read minds
You’ll learn about Sensory Acuity – we talk about how to read other people by watching out for tiny signals that other people give out non-verbally. You’ve probably seen people like Derren Brown or Paul Zenon – Mentalists or Magicians who specialise in reading people. Sometimes it’s called “Cold Reading” Now, what we’re talking about here is the ability to look at somebody and tell what they’re doing on the inside of their head by looking at them on the outside, and it can look like magic! You often see the word magic in the titles of books, because if you didn’t know what was going on you might think there’s magic to it.
But magic’s not magic at all once you know how it’s done, and when you learn Sensory Acuity skills you’ll be able to pick up signals from people that you haven’t seen before, and that tells you something, it gives you useful information. You can then alter your approach based on the feedback you’re getting – so you can tell if it’s working or not. You can tell if you’re getting rapport – you can tell if the audience is “getting it” or not.
It generally also raises your awareness – it makes you more sensory aware. You’ll pick up things that other people didn’t see, things that other people missed. Imagine that – imagine hearing more, or seeing more, or being able to detect stuff that you hadn’t noticed before. That can be useful, and one of the phrases I use a lot is “awareness is progression”. How can you progress with a problem until you’re aware of what the problem is? So, by raising your awareness you’re speeding up your progress…
And yes, I’ll teach you some of Derren Brown’s mind reading tricks, so we will have some fun on these three days, but more importantly I’ll reveal why they are useful to you in the real world
Learn how to perceive the world differently
We then look at Representational Systems. We look at the fact that, even though you’ve got 5 senses, your nervous system doesn’t favour them all equally. Everyone’s got an unconscious preference – everybody’s got one of their 5 senses that they use more than any of the others to take in information from the outside world.
In fact, some people are very visual people and take in information through what they see. Some are more auditory and take in more though what they hear. Some are more kinesthetic and they go through the world feeling everything. And there’s the people in the world (who are what we call Cerebral) who like numbers and language and think about stuff a lot in a lot of detail. Now you’re all of those, but you have a preference. Smell and taste don’t come into it much in terms of talking with other people or talking to yourself, unless of course you’re in wine tasting or making perfume.
You’ll actually discover how to tell which of the five senses a person likes to use and then how to communicate with that person using that sense, which means they suddenly feel understood at a level that they’ve probably only rarely felt before. And you’ll literally be seeing eye to eye, or really be tuned into the same wavelength, and they’ll get a gut level connection with you which can only increase the level of rapport, and which definitely increases your level of understanding. That way you avoid misunderstanding, miscommunication, and your message reaches people the way you want it to.
Imagine you have a teacher talking at a million miles an hour, who uses overheads, black boards, slides, videos and is very demonstrative, saying things like “the answer’s not on the ceiling Jonathan”. And you might have Jonathan who’s highly kinesthetic, very much into his feelings and emotions, squirming in his chair because he’s not grasping this and she’s going too fast for him. Who’s the stupid one? It’s not the student! It’s a mismatch – visual teacher and kinesthetic pupil. She needs to slow down, walk him through it slowly so he can get to grips with the stuff and feel good about it. In HGE™ we believe there’s no such thing as a learning disability – the human nervous system is the ultimate learning machine. But there are teaching disabilities! Imagine the possibilities for this in the classroom….
You’ll be able to tell what someone’s thinking…
You’ll become a master at reading eye patterns. Now, I don’t know if you already know this or not, but there’s the old phrase that “the eyes are windows to the soul”. When you talk to people and you ask them questions, their eyes move. Now, you’ve probably seen that before, but you didn’t necessarily know what itmeant? It’s been studied that when someone accesses different parts of their brain their eyes move in different ways, and by watching what people’s eyes are doing on the outside we can actually tell what they’re doing on the inside. You can tell if they’re making pictures in their head, or talking to themselves, or feeling feelings and you can almost mind read them. Now, this has lots of useful applications, you can use this all over the place.
You can tell if someone’s lying to you or not – you can become a “living lie detector”, just by watching their eyes. Watch the film “The Negotiator” with Samuel L. Jackson, cos he actually ties someone up in the film and asks him questions, then reads his eyes. You can even help someone who’s supposedly learning disabled, by helping them access the parts of their brain that are best for spelling, useful for remembering things. So, you can even help people improve their memory, or even your own, don’t forget! Now that’s got lots of uses, and that may be an area you’d like to specialise in, and we show you how to do it.
Become a master communicator
You use language all the time. I think if you’re going to talk you should use language. And people use language, both verbal and non-verbal, to communicate all of the time. As an HGE™ Practitioner we teach you how to use language at a whole new level. How to hear what’s going on behind what’s going on, because when people are talking to you and they’re telling you content, blah blah blah, “stuff”, facts, figures, details. That’s one thing. And if you want to be really skilled as an expert communicator, it pays to look at the structure of what they’re saying.
Don’t listen to what they’re saying, listen to how they say it. There’s a lot more useful information there, so you can read people’s internal maps of the world, so you can climb inside their head and tell how they think the world is, through the language they use. You can then elegantly match that language and talk back to them the way they talk to themselves, which again deepens the level of rapport, cuts down miscommunication and means you’re “heard” more than you’ve ever been before.
You can even help people redesign their map of the world in their head – conversational change – and we show you how to use language to do exactly that. If you want to learn what advertisers, politicians and effective influencers do all the time, we’re going to reveal the secrets. It also helps you defend yourself because the next time anyone uses any of that kind of stuff on you, either covertly or explicitly, you will recognise it & know what’s going on.
Isn’t all of this manipulation?
In many ways these kinds of skills have, unfortunately, been accused of being manipulative and seductive and mind controlling, and I’d like to counter that by saying that’s probably true, and I have met some people who use them for that purpose. However, for one thing, your unconscious mind protects you from those kinds of intentions and will only accept suggestions that it goes along with, and secondly, by learning these skills you are doubly protected.
Forewarned is forearmed and you’re actually going to be more safe and more protected because you’ll know how it’s done, and you’ll be able to respond the way you want to respond. Mental aikido. Besides, HGE™ is a technology, as and such it has no morals or ethics of its own. It’s the ethics and integrity of the person using it that counts. You can use a hammer to build a house, or to hurt someone. Or even better, to smash old blockages to smithereens!
Most of the work of HGE™ is based on a man called Milton Erickson who was the world’s leading Hypnotherapist until he died in 1980. A lot of the aspects come from the fascinating world of Hypnosis. So naturally, as part of a Practitioner course we show you how to create a relaxed, calm trance-like state in yourself, so you can be calm, learn more easily and reduce your blood pressure. That alone is worth doing a 8 day course for.

What does the word “Hypnosis” bring to your mind……?
Many people’s ideas about Hypnosis have mistakenly come from the stage show, not the therapy clinic.
Hypnosis has been used as a therapeutic technique since the beginning of history. References are made to it in The Bible. The sleep temples of ancientGreece and Egypt were places of healing. In the 18th century Franz Mesmer discovered he could induce trance like states, which he called “Animal Magnetism”, and he used this to treat every type of illness imaginable in Europe’s most famous clinic. His approach, called “Mesmerism”, was discredited back then, in a report that failed to examine the part of the healing process played by the patient themselves.
In reality, hypnosis is a two person relationship, as the individual creates their own relaxed trance state by following the instructions of the hypnotherapist.
By the early 1800’s a surgeon called James Easdale used Hypnosis to induce anaesthesia during operations, without chemicals. In the 19th Century James Braid (another surgeon) coined the term “Hypnosis” to explain the induction of a trance like state through simple suggestions to a concentrating patient. Freud briefly used Hypnosis to treat neuroses before shifting to much more time-consuming talking-therapies.
Hypnosis thrived as a form of stage entertainment, thus distorting the public’s view of a powerful therapeutic tool. In 1955 the British Medical School recognised Hypnotherapy as a valid method of treatment.
People who’ve experienced the benefits of trance often describe it as a “magical” experience. How else can you describe something that can change limiting habits in hours or even minutes?
But where theres magic, there’s mystery, and I’ve discovered that people who are attracted to it and who get their hopes up tend to hesitate to explore it, because they aren’t sure they want someone else controlling their minds. Please remember – you cannot be made to do things against your will that you wouldn’t do in the waking state.
In fact what happens in hypnosis is like what happens to your body if you run on a treadmill – neurological and physiological changes whose effects can be observed, measured and understood.
EEG-based research shows that when you go into a trance state, the left brain conscious mind takes a back seat while the right brain unconscious mind pays more attention, opening up and becoming more accessible than normal
When the unconscious mind is open and receptive, it takes affirmations or suggestions as more acceptable. That means you can rewrite the old programming that runs whole areas of your thinking and behaviour, so that when you come back to fully conscious again, the new programming runs in the background all by itself. It’s like “defragging” the hard drive in your head!
The true magic of hypnosis is that you don’t have to comprehend the scientific, neurological processes involved to make it work – you just have to be willing to give it a chance and really, deep down, want what you ask for.
Why isn’t it easy to get what you want?
If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably asked yourself the same question. Problem is, the most obvious answers – the ones everyone tells you – aren’t true…
It ISN’T about desire – you can desperately want a result and still never achieve it, can’t you?
It ISN’T determination – how many times have you vowed to change and still did nothing about it? Honestly, haven’t we all?
It ISN’T taking action – you can do all the right things, follow all the rules, and still have your hopes dashed. That ever happened to you?
If you can relate to the frustration of consistently being denied the things you really crave in your life – in spite of your best efforts and desire – then here’s the news:
Somewhere between wanting something, and getting it…between setting a goal and achieving it…between where you are right now and where you’d ideally like to be…there is a missing part of the formula. A secret ingredient that you never thought to look for, because you had no idea it existed.
Meet the “silent partner” who’s been running your life
Imagine if you owned a small business and the wrong products are coming in, orders are getting mixed up, numbers don’t add up. You’re doing everything right but the results are all wrong, and you’re baffled. What’s going on?
Now imagine finding out that your silent partner – someone you rarely speak to or meet with – has been overriding all of your decisions and has been running the show himself!
This scenario takes place every day, only the business is your life, and the partner pulling the strings is your unconscious mind…
From the way you handle your money, the people you’re attracted to, the food you eat…even the state of your health…all of your behaviours, actions and attitudes are ruled by your unconscious mind.
And if you’re like very other human being I’ve ever met, you have limiting beliefs, past hurts and dumb habits that hold you back and drag you down, yes? The very fact that the unconscious can resist change is WHY you need to learn Hypnosis.
These beliefs and habits have their origins in deep rooted past experiences that are often long-forgotten by you, but your unconscious mind NEVER forgets. And sometimes, like a scolded child, it overreacts and interprets events in a way that creates obstacles for you, AND YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON IN THERE!
Take weight loss for example. You can diet, exercise, stop eating carbs, hire a fitness trainer, do all the best things you can think of to lose excess pounds. But what if your unconscious mind thinks that the extra weight is “body armour” to protect you, or that to be powerful you’ve got to be big like Aunt Marjory was…? Guess who wins?
The same holds true in money, relationships, health, social life, any situation you can think of – if your logical conscious mind wants one thing, but your emotional unconscious mind likes things the way they are, good luck! Its simply not going to happen!
What if you could reprogram the unconscious, by learning to talk its language? And what if it could talk back? Whoah!
Once you know how to do that , you’ll be able to make changes that you’ve struggled with for years – even changes you might have thought were impossible for you, because you’ll be working WITH your silent partner, not AGAINST them. Imagine for a moment – if it has the power to stop you, what can you achieve with it working FOR you?
Since the unconscious mind takes orders from the conscious mind, we can consciously substitute new, constructive ideas to negate the old, outdated negative ones.

What hypnosis is…and what it certainly isn’t
Hollywood, Derren Brown and science fiction have left most of us with a very inaccurate picture of what hypnosis is really all about.
To begin with, you are not asleep. On the contrary, you are in a heightened state of awareness, fully awake, just very deeply relaxed, and responsive to anything you’d like to take on board. Remember – your mind will flatly reject anything that goes against your values and beliefs.
But one common perception of Hypnosis is true – it is extraordinarily powerful, and it can have an immediate, profound and permanent effect on your behaviour.
I’ll dispel the myths and teach you the fascinating mechanics of trance, including:

This is the “Hypno” part in HGE™ – where you will learn how to induce trance in yourself and others, establish a connection with your unconscious, learn how to structure a hypnotherapy session, plus you’ll learn how to create all the deep trance phenomena (sleep walking, catalepsy) you’ve ever seen (and some you haven’t). So far I have a 100% success rate with every student achieving every phenomena they wish to.

We also have great memories that make us feel upbeat and positive – fine, we’ll leave those ones alone. On this course we’ll teach you powerful Time Line techniques to make things of the past truly things of the past. In 1985, Dr Tad James modelled hypnotherapist Milton Erickson & applied a therapeutic process to the concept of an internal memory storage system. The result was a collection of techniques, which produces long-lasting transformation very quickly – faster than what is currently called Brief Therapy. These powerful Time Line Therapy™ techniques are becoming the method of choice to make fast, effective, long-term changes in behaviour. Your “Time Line” is how you unconsciously store your memories or how you unconsciously know the difference between a memory from the past and a projection of the future. The Time Line Therapy™ process allows you to work at the unconscious level and release the effects of past negative experiences and change “inappropriate” programming in minutes rather than days, months or years.

I just need to know when was it built and where is the weak point that holds it all up. Does that make sense?
THERE’S ABOUT 4 WAYS TO HANDLE YOUR EMOTIONS…
- You can try to ignore them – that’s like getting a red light on the dashboard of your car. The message is to slow down, pull over and take a look under the bonnet. You wouldn’t ignore it and keep pushing on, would you? Or worse, stick some black tape over it so you can’t see it? I hope not, or else you might end up stranded on the hard shoulder, and you don’t want that.
- Secondly, you can try to not feel – repress your emotions, keep them stuffed under the carpet. Does that work? Is that healthy? Of course not. You probably know someone who has sat on painful emotions for years, and it’s still in there, festering. The Hawaiians called it “the thing that eats away inside”
- Sometimes people wear their bad feelings like a badge of honour, compete with you and try to always upstage you. “Ha! You think you’ve got it tough, wait till I tell you….”
- The fourth, and the best way to handle your feelings, is to think of them as helpful action signals. There’s something to learn from them as they try to get your attention. They are focussing you, telling you that you’re off the beaten path. Acknowledge that you’ve got strong emotions coming up, and learn from it. Get the gold nuggets – get the pearls of wisdom, the life lessons.
Have you ever had toothache so bad that eventually you go to the dentist, and as you sit in the waiting room, smelling the sterile smell of the surgery and hearing the high pitched whine of the drill, what happens to the pain? IT DISAPPEARS!! Why? Because you paid attention and did something about it. Magic formula.
Any time you’ve gotten emotional, angry, sad, whatever, did feeling that strong reaction actually help you deal with the situation? Or does it make it harder? What if you could learn how to release that emotion, in minutes not months?
Oh sure, given 20 years you might look back on this and laugh, but why wait? Let’s get over it now!
Ever made a decision that has held you back ever since?
Imagine someone who, in their relationships keeps attracting the wrong type of partner. Or money. I once had a client who told me he could never earn more than £50,000. On investigation it turned out he’d heard a conversation on TV while in the womb. Imagine that! One female client of mine had self-esteem issues about being too “mannish”– she talked in a deep, macho voice and wore polo necks to her chin and jeans over her ankles, covering herself up as much as possible. On investigation it turned out that at aged 16 she climbed out of a swimming pool on holiday in Yugoslavia, and every lecherous old man within a mile radius leered at her, and in that one moment her unconscious mind decided, “it’s not safe to be sexy”. As Tony Robbins once said, it’s in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped!

ANXIETY IS A FUTURE BASED EMOTION, where something might happen and you don’t know what to do if it does. You’re asking yourself “What if….?” questions.
Anxious about sitting examinations? Job interview coming up and you’re worried? Have to do a presentation and scared it might go wrong? Yearning to ask someone out but worried in case they reject you?
This is probably the fastest and easiest technique I know!

I talk about their eyes going back in their sockets, no longer bulging with all that “stuff” behind them… Occasionally people then look back and are actually grateful for that past experience, because of what it’s taught them.

Destroy problems and build solutions
You’ll then explore the world of Submodalities. That’s a big word, so let’s break it down. You have 5 senses, which in HGE are often called “Modalities”. So your eyesight for instance is often called the Visual Modality. “Sub” modalities are the finer distinctions, which create meaning from our internal maps. So, for example, if you picture your home in your mind’s eye right now……
- Is the picture in your head bright or dim?
- Eye level, above or below?
- A moving picture or a still photo?
Fascinating, isn’t it? You probably haven’t thought about it before. Sometimes the pictures you make in your head are in colour, sometimes they’re in black and white. Then there’s the voice in your head that you use to talk to yourself. Is it loud or is it soft? Is it constant or does it come and go? And that voice is probably asking yourself right now, “So what?
What does all this mean?” It’s all very curious and interesting, but how can I use it? Submodalities are a huge part of HGE™, and are useful in all kinds of ways – they’re the building blocks of how someone does something in their head. They’re the ingredients in their recipe. So, if you want to change what they’re doing in their head you can actually pull the recipe apart, once you know the Submodalities. Useful for stopping food compulsions, removing phobias, creating new habits, making goals more achievable, changing your mood, changing limiting beliefs and much more.
Borrow someone else’s building blocks if they’re really good at what they do. If you make the same pictures as me in your head, and you say to yourself what I say to myself in your head, you’ll get much the same result and behaviour as I do. You’re making pictures in your head all day long, every day, you’re always talking to yourself, so imagine if you had ways to “edit” it, and make bad pictures of bad memories disappear – you can effectively wipe the video tape clean! So it doesn’t bother you anymore. That’s the basis of the fast phobia cure, which we teach you using Submodalities. You can change Beliefs using this. If you were to find the building blocks of a conviction, something you believe in strongly, you could then put any belief into that coding, and you’d feel just as strong about the new belief. Imagine that. Can you believe it?
What that means to you is that you can basically design what you want to believe in. Imagine a runner using this to believe they’re going to be able to finish a race. Or a team convinced they’re going to perform brilliantly in their game today. Do you think that could make a difference?
If you could change anything about yourself…
We also teach you how to change habits. In HGE™ we call them Strategies: internal processes that drive complex behaviours. How different people make decisions, get motivated and perform any behaviour. People have “recipes” for doing things. You always put the same shoe on first. You tend to leave your keys in the same place every time and if they’re not there you frazzle!
Every human behaviour has a recipe, from doing depression to becoming wealthy. You think the same pictures in the same place every time, you ask the same stupid questions and you wonder why you haven’t miraculously changed? Recipe books sell because recipes work – do this in this order in these amounts and you always get a nice chocolate cake. Take the chocolate out, it’ll still be a cake but it won’t taste the same. Or if your Granny makes delicious cake, you could use her recipe, yeah? If you can pull apart the recipe, you can either change it, or you can borrow it. New ways of thinking, new ways of acting in yourself and other people.
If you don’t like what you’re doing, change it! Stop biting your nails, stop dwelling on old hurts. You can probably think of things like that, that every time you picture that memory you groan inside. Well imagine if you could change that, forever, so you dwell on better things instead. Because that’s what we’re talking about here.
Most of the things that drive human behaviours are unconscious, so for example people who are good at making decisions, who are very decisive people, they don’t know how they do it, they just know they’re good at making decisions. Now if you want to be more decisive, you could model what they do and use their recipe for decision making, and you’d be more decisive. That’s maybe something you’d like to think about doing, and decide if that’s useful to you or not, or maybe you can’t make up your mind [ha ha!]
Now imagine finding out someone’s recipe for ruining their marriage. A lot of therapist and counsellors would ask why? In HGE™ we ask “how?” Knowing why means they’re still ruining their marriage, and now they know why. Once you know how they’re doing that, you know how to save it. Does that make sense?
If you want any result in life, you could find someone who’s already doing it, and borrow their recipe. You want to be good at HGE™, talk to someone who’s been doing it for years and is obviously having their cake and eating it! You don’t just stand there and go “Oh that’s amazing, you’re great so you are!” You say “C’mere, how do you do that?” That’s the secret of most of HGE™ – there’s nothing particularly new in this syllabus – all I’ve done is study what works. Look at any person who’s good at what they do and pull out of their heads how they do it, and then you can do it better than you could before, maybe as good as they can. Maybe better than them. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel, you can compress decades into days as Tony Robbins says, and learn things without making all the same mistakes. That then begs the question “What do you want to learn next and who do you know who can already do that?” because that’s the person you want to spend time with.
Borrowing strategies comes under the heading of Modelling: installing new powerful strategies for any new behaviour an individual or organisation wants to adopt. Trying to become financially independent by spending more than you earn will never work. Spending less than you earn and investing the difference will. That’s what this technology is really about – taking other people’s excellent behaviours and learning how to do them yourself.
Have any emotional state on tap, at will, anywhere
Next you look at the process called “Anchoring”. You’ve probably heard of Ivan Pavlov – you know the guy who rang a bell and the dogs salivated? Cos they were hungry? He’d show them some meat and while they were gagging for it he’d ring a bell. Eventually he could just ring the bell and have no meat present, and the dogs would salivate. Yeah? (It was actually a tuning fork but let’s not be picky). That was an anchor – the bell became the anchor. At school the bell was an anchor. It was either time for you to get back in there and into your class, or it was time for you to get out of there and get home as quickly as possible. Or maybe you were late, and the bell became an anchor for how little time you’ve got to get down the road and into school. Remember this stuff?
We can all think of things that act as triggers in our lives- that whenever they happen they fire off certain states. Maybe a song that you hear that puts you into a sad state, cos last time you heard that song you were in a sad state, and the two became neurologically linked. Or maybe there’s a particular smell (and the perfume industry knows this one) that whenever you smell it you go into a nice, pleasant state.
These are anchors – triggers that are hard wired into your neurology, so you have no conscious control when they’re fired off – you’ll go into that state automatically. Imagine that! Now if it’s a nice state than we’ll leave it alone, but if it’s a negative one, there are ways to collapse the anchor, or neutralise it, so it doesn’t control you anymore. We show you how to do that, which means no longer are you one of Pavlov’s dogs – you’re no longer a conditioned animal, you actually have a choice about it & you can choose not to react.
In my history there was a village that I’d drive through, and every time I did I went into a negative state, because of what I associated to that place, even though those events happened 20 years ago! Wouldn’t it be great to be able to cancel it out so it doesn’t affect you? You can probably think of some triggers like that, yes? Songs or pictures or things that maybe flash into your head….
Equally it’s very useful to be able to set positive anchors. Maybe you’d like to be more excited more often, or more driven more often. Imagine if you could basically have that state “on tap” and anytime you wanted to feel that way you could fire it off, and you’d go into that state. That then begs the question – what kinds of emotional states would you like to feel more often? Because we can show you how to anchor them into yourself so you can go into those feelings anytime you want to.
Become a master communicator
We use language all the time. I think if you’re going to talk you should use language. And people use language, both verbal and non-verbal, to communicate all of the time. As an HGE™ Practitioner, we teach you how to use language at a whole new level. How to hear what’s going on behind what’s going on, because when people are talking to you and they’re telling you content, blah blah blah, “stuff”, facts, figures, details. That’s one thing. And if you want to be really skilled as an expert communicator, it pays to look at the structure of what they’re saying. Don’t listen to what they’re saying, listen to how they say it. There’s a lot more useful information there, so you can read people’s internal maps of the world, so you can climb inside their head and tell how they think the world is, through the language they use. You can then elegantly match that language and talk back to them the way they talk to themselves, which again deepens the level of rapport, cuts down miscommunication and means you’re “heard” more than you’ve ever been before.
You can even help people redesign their map of the world in their head – conversational change – and we show you how to use language to do exactly that. If you want to learn what advertisers, politicians and effective influencers do all the time, we’re going to reveal the secrets. It also helps you defend yourself because the next time anyone uses any of that kind of stuff on you, either covertly or explicitly, you will recognise it & know what’s going on.
Oh, and then we add to that the ability to use language in a hypnotic way. We’ll teach you to speak using hypnotic language patterns. Or maybe even write that way as well. You may have noticed that the way some of the paragraphs in this letter you’ve been reading sound different from the way most normal people speak, don’t they? And there’s probably a good reason for that . And as you think about that now you might like to fully consider how many ways you could use similar things in your life, those kind of insights and understandings will allow you to create that trance-like ability in other people, where you just relax and go along with what you’re saying cos it sounds good.
Now, if you reread that last paragraph you’ll probably find that there wasn’t a lot in there to learn, but it certainly sounded good. Imagine if you could present information in a way where people find that they intently listen to you, or they are at least calm, relaxed, and captivated by your every word. You could effectively do hypnosis with people, and when it comes to using HGE™ for therapy, we show you exactly how to do that.
The flip side of the coin, linguistically, is to get more and more specific and more precise. One of the great strengths in this training is that we have the questions to ask, to cut through the chaff & to get into the real meat and bones of the matter. People tend to talk in really fluffy, general language. You ask someone “how’s it going?” and they say “Fine”. That doesn’t really tell you very much. We teach you how to cut through the surface structure of people’s language and get into the real nitty gritty, so you can get to the heart of the matter within 2 or 3 sentences, with precision and elegance.
The fact is, you’ll be able to talk to somebody and become like a living lie detector, because you can pull out information from them which they maybe didn’t even know was going on inside. Now, in therapy that enables you to be able to get to the root cause of a problem very, very quickly. In Coaching or Negotiation or Facilitation it allows you to get into specific detail rapidly, cutting to the chase. It means you’re understood more often, again increasing rapport, understanding and agreement. Wouldn’t that be useful? Are you starting to see what all the fuss is about?
Help people change their minds
We teach you how to use language to change how you, or someone else, thinks about something, using what’s called Reframing. Picture the scene – a young couple sitting in a nice restaurant holding hands and gazing lovingly into each other’s eyes… And as the camera pans back, you see the bomb beneath the table with 10 seconds on the clock….9….8… Now at first you thought “That’s a nice picture, just a couple having a nice romantic meal”. Then suddenly you begin to see a bigger picture.
That’s a reframe – it’s not what you thought, it’s something completely different! So the next time your best friend gets upset over something, imagine if you just used one or two sentences to suggest they look at it from a totally different viewpoint. Suddenly the problem’s not a problem. Or in a business setting, you have a reframe ready for any objection you might meet… Where else can you think of where you could use that? Therapy? Coaching? Negotiation?
Most humour is reframing. You think the joke is going one way and at the last moment the punch line takes you somewhere else, and that’s the funny part! Even if you know it’s coming! That’s a reframe, and we show you how to do that.
How to negotiate what you want
You also get to practice negotiation. We teach you a negotiation model, which is stunningly simple and very, very elegant. It enables you to get agreement between any two parties very, very quickly. Imagine walking into a meeting knowing that you get agreement. How useful is that? You know in advance that you can get agreement. You can see eye-to-eye with people, and you can bring people who are arguing together and see the common ground that they are both aiming towards within 5 to 10 minutes, maybe even sooner.
You’ll discover how to use metaphors and stories and analogies to impart a message. That’s something that Milton H. Erickson was very, very good at, and if you think about it, throughout history there’s been storytelling and people sitting round the campfire, and wisdom and knowledge was always imparted by the wise, old, elder people in the village through stories and through legends and through fables.
I actually teach you how to construct therapeutic metaphors that you can use in therapy to have the client shift, because you’re telling a story that is not about them, so they assume it’s something else, and that allows them to make changes on an unconscious level that they didn’t realise were going on, haven’t you?
You can also use stories in educational training to impart a message, so that the students find themselves being very, very good at the skill but not really knowing why. That’s because you effectively taught them metaphorically, so when it came to actually covering the content of your presentation, they already knew it on some level. Imagine that! You watch a film like “Star Wars” where you learn about a certain way of talking that has people change their mind, and Obi Wan Kinobi says “these aren’t the droids you’re looking for” and the Stormtroopers just agree and let them pass. He was using HGE™!
